COMMON INJURIES WHEN PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE, FLOOD, OR OTHER NATURAL DISASTER

· Falls from a ladder to close storm windows (broken bones, internal bleeding, head injury)

·     severe lacerations/abrasions on hands if not adequately protected (handling shutters, cleaning yard)

·     shoulder, neck, and back injuries from improper body mechanics (lifting, carrying, pulling)

·     severe cuts/infections to feet if not adequately protected (broken glass, splintered wood, exposed nails)

PRACTICE PROPER SAFETY TECHNIQUES DURING STORM SEASON

Take steps to protect yourself and avoid injuries:

· use proper equipment (work gloves, closed-toed shoes, power tools)

· utilize good body mechanics (bend with the knees not the back, move heavy or bulky objects with 2 or more people)

· stay safe in hot weather (take frequent rest breaks, stay hydrated)

· pay attention to what your body is saying (pushing through pain can exacerbate injuries)
